If we were Marrier d’Unienville
The artwork exhibited at The Print House gallery and Autograph is a tribute to Sabrina Tirvengadum's great-grandmother.
The piece was inspired by Sabrina's visit to Mauritius after being away for 14 years. During her trip, she learned that her great-grandmother had worked as a maid for the Marrier d'Unienville family, a French aristocratic family whose surname is now a part of Sabrina's DNA. The realization of her family's hidden history in a country with a complex indentured past motivated Sabrina and Mark to focus on recording and sharing untold stories to raise awareness about generational trauma.
The artwork is a poignant reminder of the importance of acknowledging and exploring one's cultural heritage, and the impact of untold stories on personal identity.
